Reusable Putty

As a kid growing up me and my brothers use to play with gray putty that we would take from around windows. It was kind of hard, but if you worked it a bit it would become soft again. Does anyone know the name of that putty and where can I get it from?

If it came in rope form, it's probably Mortite. Still sold in Home Depot and probably other hardware and home improvement stores.
It's amazing that stuff is still around. I remember putting that up on my parents house in the '50's.

JRMN, did you have a lot of windows fall out when you were a kid?

It was used to stop drafts between the frame and the sashes. We had metal casements and a seasonal ritual until the windows were replaced.

I was thinking that he was pulling off the glaziers putty. Then he would have had some broken windows (and probably a red backside!).
