Remodel House with Design Software

I'm looking at buying a house that only has one bathroom, I want to add a second bathroom and move the master bedroom to the other side of the house. I'm looking for Remodeling Software that allows me to construct (draw) my house as it currently is (with one bathroom & bedrooms next to each other), then rearrange (redesign) the floor plan to meet my needs. The software would show me before and after floor plans and calculate what changes need to be made. For example adding a second bathroom requires adding walls and maybe removing a few walls or changes to existing walls, adding drains for the toilet and shower and running water and electricity. It would also calculate a bill of materials, etc..

Re: Remodel House with Design Software

I am sure there are some CAD softwares out there that will have libraries full of materials / prices / volume estimates etc. Those are probably $500+ and will take a while to learn if you have no prior experience.

Google sketchup is free and VERY versatile - there are plenty of architects that use this sofware. You can create almost anything and there is an open library of objects you can use. I am not sure but I imagine you can assign values to them to track pricing. Sketchup will take a while to learn like other CAD's

IKEA actually has a kitchen designer that is really easy to use and it is surprisingly useful. It has good dimension tools, and can place almost all of their products in the home with correct dimensions. Extra handy if you plan on using ikea stuff.

Re: Remodel House with Design Software

I am using Google Sketchup for just this project. Do you have your existing blueprints? I did a pretty good job of laying out my house with it. But paid someone I found on "FIVER" to make the drawings so I could submit to the town for approval of external additions.

There are some paid additions to Sketchup that help draw flooring and framing details and calculate materials. I think the bill of materials will be limited to lumber. When it comes to wiring, drains, sinks, etc., I think you are on your own. CAD software is out there that might be able to do that but the ones i looked at were thousands of dollars and hard to learn. That time and money would be better spent hiring someone to consult on design and costs.
