Re: Raccoon family settled inside chimney

Thanks for the great advice given to the OP everyone. I just got a timely call from a tenant last night that a family knocked out the soffit and moved into the porch roof. Will try some of these tricks.

Being not inside the house a rag soaked in ammonia placed in a can and set up there may drive them out from the smell.

Re: Raccoon family settled inside chimney

Yes, thanks again for all advice. I have a bottle of ammonia ready and I can also get coyote urine anytime from the nearest hardware store if it comes to that.

For now the plan is to wait them out since they're not doing damage living in the chimney. The mom should be taking the babies outside at the end of the month. My only concern is the damper can't fully close, but I hope by now they're skillful enough not to fall down in the fire place (I've tied up its door with rope just in case). I decided not to scare them with sounds and smells for 2 reasons - 1st - let them live (if babies are prematurely taken outside they won't survive from what I read), 2nd - if I scare away the mother she may leave a baby behind, which will become a smelly problem when dead.

I will use ammonia/urine if they hesitate to leave when 8-10 weeks have passed, I'm ok providing only temporary shelter. Once they're gone chimney will be permanently capped.

This version the language was edited, couldn’t post some of the others. But I would say this would be a typical coon mom
