Palm falls down power goes off then on again

Had a big fish tail palm fall down at a quarter to noon on Super Bowl Sunday Eve.

Yowza Maria scream excrement.

Palm was big, 60 feet 20 M tall.

Yes I do, hopefully the internet will be hooked up today.

Getting the power up was a lot less arduous than I feared. When the power company severed the connection after the tree fell on it, the "weatherhead" where the wires connected to house was damaged, and I was told that I'd have to have a "licensed electrician" fix it.

My lawyer's training made me assume that I'd have to get a licensed electrician and have him or her sign off on something to get the power hooked up.

A friend in the palm society who is also an attorney and a licensed electrician told me that all I had to do was replace the hookup, call the power company and tell them to hook me back up again. There's no need to get anyone to sign off on anything (unlike, say a building inspection).

So, my handy helper talked me into doing a better hookup than the original, and we did. The hookup appears to have been designed to fail, instead of ripping out half the wall. The damage, after the panic subsided, was quite minor. The breaker box was okay, and since it was outside, there was no damage to interior walls or any need to mess with that kind of thing. New conduit went right in, bim bam boom.

On completion, we called the power company and they turned me on - in the middle of the night.

Now I'm waiting for my internet to get hooked up.

Meantime, I can saw up that trunk with my electric chainsaw while I wait for Spectrum to get there . . . . .

Tree also trashed the infamous Shaggin’ Wagon, which wasn’t running and hadn’t been for a while.

It “took the bullet” and stopped the tree from trashing other vehicles nearby including El Rojo Cochinito and the Buffoonery Mobile, in the background.

While we waited for the power we used an insulator from the power pole as a candle holder.

Fridge was out but house was so cold that beer stayed cold, too.

ˇ Viva cerveza!

Re: Palm falls down power goes off then on again

Friend of mine was watching TV one Sunday morning with the kids while mom was fixing breakfast and when done she called them into the kitchen. Just as they all got into the kitchen the tree came thru the living room and dining room, no one was hurt. 30% of the house was completely replaced from the foundation up.

Re: Palm falls down power goes off then on again

Do you know why the tree snapped? Was it rotten? I saw a huge palm the other day, pulled out with a tractor, on an almond ranch. It had shallow but extensive roots.

That's sort of what happened to my palm. Buddy was watching the BATV and the wind kicked up really bad, suddenly a crack like a rifle shot, followed by the "Boom" of the trunk hitting the van and blowing out the windows, followed by balls of blue electrical fire.

Hoo, yeah, no one got killed.

This poor palm was compromised, and I think the discussion is important enough to warrant a separate thread down in the Garden section or thereabouts.

So here it is. https://www.diychatroom.com/f16/less...m-tree-652919/

Palms usually have a shallow root system, about a gazillion 3/8" diameter runners.

Sounds like you're talking about a plant totally different from the one I just lost. Some palms do spread, though most don't.

Some have deep roots.
