Mystery leak

Does anyone have any ideas what this might be? There is a brown fluid leaking onto the dryer in the basement this is a one floor house and its more or less under a wall between the kitchen and bathroom. Smells like a campfire. It's the apparent drip from the floor above is not near any drain, the kitchen sink is 5 feet away in one direction, the toilet 3 feet in the opposite direction.

Best guess is possibly a roof leak, haven't been able to get into the attic yet. While observing I could not see any of you dripping from running the very this fixed years but after everything I've stopped running I did feel 1 drip I cleaned the top of the dryer and in the last half hour there's been a few drops on a paper towel I left there.

Do the drains go into the wall? Start by filling the sink and then let drain. See what happens downstairs.

Just the bathroom sink. Tried that but it didn't cause any increased leak or drip in the basement. The sink drain would go to the stack in the same wall, it's over the kitchen joist cavity next to the one with the leak.

Could easily be a roof leak. By the time water runs down through a wall it will be brown even if it's rain water. Dishwasher above? Could be a leak there.

Creosote smells like a campfire and comes from chimneys. Do you burn wood? If so, is the chimney anywhere on the same side of the roof ridge as the leak? Leaks can move quite a ways horizontally before the drip down into the living space.

+1

Start cutting open inspection if you can't check the roof.

Update, the dryer onto which the leak was dripping had been cleaned and paper towels left to watch for more drips. The leak moved. I took the front cover off the dishwasher and saw a drip from the supply line. Haven't been back to the house since to see if the problem is fixed.
