Mounting tv above mantel with mirror

Hi

If this is possible I need some how-to ideas on mounting the tv above the fireplace. That big mirror is getting the way. Please see the pictures.

I was thinking on installing a “decorative lumber” going across the top of the door (on the left) to above the above the window (on the right). Then mount the tv to that lumber and maybe rest the bottom of the tv without the stand on the mantel.

Would be nice if I can mount the tv above the fireplace and be able to move it vertically up and down as well. But that may be out of the picture in this setup.

Anyways looking ideas and suggestions.

Thanks.

When mounted above a fireplace, a TV is typically too high to start with, so I don't see needing to move it up and down.

If you don't want to remove the mirror, just put something in front of it to black it out, and put the TV on the mantle.

Is the mirror on an angle to the mantle.

Mirror is not at an angle. It goes straight up to the (2nd floor) ceiling - that is the ceiling is about 17 foot high.

Something like the center section in this picture might work.

I think you need to find a better location for the TV.

Or....

Get rid of the mirror.

If you use the fireplace, a tv above it is a poor idea for 2 reasons....the heat from the fireplace 'could' damage the TV...and the light from the fireplace distracts from the image on the TV

Re: Mounting tv above mantel with mirror

After the work, you may find the advices about the angle and the heat were right after all. I'd put the tv on the mantle first (have someone hold it there) and test if it works, at least angle wise. Lean on the mantle first and make sure it feels like it can support the tv temp.

Work: Door and the window on the sides have frame behind the trim and the drywall. Frame may be 1" or bit more inwards from the jamb edges. Small drill bit would be the test to find the frame center. You may want to remove little bit of drywall to visually make sure. You could remove those trims, screw in blocks that are proud of the mirror, screw in a 2x6 or 8 on the blocks. You'll have to dress the rough lumber or find finished lumber. Possible to make the cross frame with plywood. Then return the trims. One thing about the door side is the block will prevent the door from opening further. Your door opening will be limited to the opening minus the door/hinge. Also install a door stop so it never bangs into the tv frame.

Re: Mounting tv above mantel with mirror

Totally love that mirror.

I'm pretty sure the mirror weighs more then the TV.

I would set the TV on a mount that attaches to the mantel

If you are in doubt just use two of these or something like 'em.

Re: Mounting tv above mantel with mirror

Personal tastes, but I'm not a fan of the mirror (too big) or mounting TVs above fireplaces (too high). If you were to put it on or above the mantle, I would use a proper mount rather than trying to balance it on a strip of wood. Remember that you have to get any cabling up there as well.

I like the suction cup idea, although I was thinking you can't depend on it. I never bought expensive suction cups. Since the shelf looks sturdy enough, you can use the cup and fix the tv to a safety cable? Drill holes in the attach plate for the cables.

We had the idea that we could hoist a 500 pound window up with a come-a-long and one suction cut. Cup never moved but the glass broke.

Re: Mounting tv above mantel with mirror

I would definitely use the braces

You can also use raceways painted or not to hide or cover any wires

There's lots of ways of doing it, pick the one that you like.

You can even use the TV's stand and put a few screws in it to secure it to the mantel.
