Hvac uncoupled in hard to reach area

I was shortening a circular duct in my bathroom and when cutting it I uncoupled it from the main. I went in the basement and the wall and pvc to the radon system are in the way. On the other side is the main return ductwork.
I'm a small enough person to crawl between the joists but I would have to put my weight on the return main... Is this strong enough? Otherwise I'll have to poke through the ceiling to repair it.

Do you have room between the main and the joist bottoms to jam a piece of plywood in there and put a handful of screws through it up into the joists, to take your weight instead of the main?
