How to remove broken lawnmower blade ?

I cant get this broken blade off. The nut wont come loose at all, no matter how much pressure i apply. I have to hold the broken bit of the blade otherwise it just spins around. Is there a certain knack?

Hi Mark, not a pro, but I would first decide if it is a left or right hand thread. Some one smarter then me should have some guidance on how to determine that.

It's removed the same way I remove pulleys that are difficult to hold. You tether a wrench ( 6 point socket or box wrench preferred ) so it doesn't fly and hit you in the crotch, then smack the wrench with a 2x4 about 3 ft. long. For reference it's called a red neck impact. If it didn't loosen you didn't smack it hard enough. Do it as if splitting fire wood.

Bud
I ain't smarter than nobody but I believe we can safely say if the discharge is right side when viewed from the rear the thread is right hand. At least that's all I've seen.

Depending on what broke the blade, if you plan to use the mower I suggest checking shaft run out before bothering to remove the blade. Example: If hitting a concrete boulder broke it the engine may be scrap metal.

Re: How to remove broken lawnmower blade ?

Treat it with PB or liquid wrench every day for a week. Tap it each time with a hammer taking care to not deform the nut.

Vice grips may be the only option for holding the blade bit though a piece of pipe that would slide over it would provide more leverage for holding.

Then try to remove it. Once you get it broken loose the rest is easy.

Re: How to remove broken lawnmower blade ?

You didn’t say if it’s gas or electric. Is there a clutch? Impact driver and/or remove spark plug and insert a bunch of rope/cord, rotate until it bottoms out, use a pipe on the handle of your socket wrench.

Which ever direction the blade spins when is the direction you need to turn the nut. It could be righty loosey.

Pull your spark plug - just in case you get a partial revolution and it sparks and tires to start. Removing the plug means you won't have compression and you eliminate the chance of kick compressive kickback.

A good fitting wrench and a good swift hit with a hammer works well most of the time.

There is a lot of truth to that. One time I was trying to take a wheel off my truck. I got the nuts off, but the rim was just impossibly fused on there. I did the PB blaster and I was wailing on it with a 4 pound sledge hammer for an hour. The rim was getting all bent and screwed up, but it wasn't coming off. I thought a bigger hammer would just do more damage. But, I didn't know what else to try. I got 12 pound big brother and popped it off easily in about 3 whacks. No damage at all.
