Heavy salt build up on carpet

I left a bag of water softener salt on the carpet in my damp basement and over a period of time the salt must have have leached through the bag and now I have 1/16. - 1/8 deposit build up on carpet. And it is dried solid. Anybody suggest how to dissolve this build up deposit without ruining the carpet.

Thanks.

I've used salt away for a while and been really happy with the cleaning results i get with using it, i personally wouldn't use it for an out board as it can cause a clog up with residue from the solution.

Removing road salt from vehicle carpets is an annual Spring ritual up here. I do exactly as in Neal's post. If it's sodium chloride it should come off with just warm water.

Re: Heavy salt build up on carpet

I think you need to soak the carpet with lots of whatever solution you choose. Then after the few minutes you press hard and sop it up as much as you can leaving the carpet as dry as you can.

Apply lots of plain water to rinse with and again wait a few minutes and sop up as much as you can. Depending on how soiled the carpet was to start with you might need two rinses.

Then finally let it fully dry by itself.

It is hard to prove how much of the added solution you applied was sopped up but if you sopped up 50% of what you sprayed on then at least (the other) 50% of the original salt (excluding what you vacuumed off at the very beginning) will be left behind in the carpet. If you used more solution and did sop up 80% then only 20% of the solution together with (20% of) the original salt will be left behind. More soakings with solution before the still required rinses will remove more of the original salt if you had difficulty sopping up.

Re: Heavy salt build up on carpet

In the same fashion as spraying on solution manually using a trigger spray bottle, you need to rinse the carpet when using the Rug Doctor or similar machine. Make a second trip around the room with the solution hopper in the machine filled with plain hot water.
