furnace sizing

If I am seeing 4 burner pipes in my furnace, does this indicate it is a 40,000 BTU furnace?

No, the rating plate on the furnace will give you the info you need. If you are replacing a furnace do not go by that rating as many older homes had the furnaces way oversized. The rating plate will most likely have two ratings on it. One will BTU input and the other will be BTU output. The difference between the two will allow you to calculate the efficiency rating
