Feedback On Pergola Ideas Please

Hi

Im looking for some feedback on a pergola plan.

I have never built one this large.

It will be approximately 14 to 16 feet wide by 14 to 16 feet long.

My plan is to have 3 6 posts and on top of them double up 2 2x 6 x 14 to 16 aligned parallel to a brick wall.

Along the brick wall I will attach 2 pieces of 2x6 and then attach hanging metal brackets and then run a series of 2x6 to from the wall to sit on top of the doubled up boards.

Does this sound ok?

1. Is there a standard height for a pergola?
2. Are 2x6 boards fine?
3. For the boards running from the wall to the doubles up boards whats their spacing apart? 16
4. Do I need 3 support posts for a 14-16 support posts or is two fine?

I have mocked up my idea in a diagram.

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the feedback

How do you plan on attaching your 2x6's to the posts? Bricks do not offer any structural stability. Can you not make this free standing? It would require cross bracing, but it won't infiltrate your home and possibly dislodge brick from their places.

Re: Feedback On Pergola Ideas Please

You don't say where you are located, so it is impossible to understand the loads on your pergola. Wind loads are usually the largest load on a structure with no roof, and maximum wind loads depends strongly on location. I am unclear how you selected lumber size, did you look at other pergolas, did you guess at the size. did you look at plans? If you think you might add a roof later, size of joists and beams will be different than if you plan on an open structure.

Re: Feedback On Pergola Ideas Please

Hi I live in Southern Ontario. I dont believe wind is an issue more likely snow. I saw other pergolas and thats where I got the 2x6 dimension. Im not saying thats correct though.
