I don't think it was a matter of "builders used these products believing them to be cheaper but safe", but a matter of "supply and demand". After all of the "natural disasters" such as hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, etc. the gypsum industry could not keep up with the demand. New plants were in the construction phase and coming "on-line" , but not fast enough to meet the demand for drywall. The natural answer was to import. Everything else comes from China......
