To join 2 sheets of metal, like a furnace duct.

Or to attach something to a metal plate, or erecting metal stud walls.

Anything like that, they are useful.

What about screwing plywood to subfloor?

Well most self drilling screws are self tapping once the bit gets through the metal. It's not tapped like a tapered tap would do, but it works.

Caught your last post after posting this. No, no self drilling screws. Use deck screws for that. In addition put your screws to intentionally miss your joists.

Will not work, the cuttings need a place to go, and with the screw threads in the way, you won't get any hold.

There are self drilling wood screws. Maybe that's what he's talking about? I use them everywhere I would use a nail.

I'll be using a collated screw gun. Apparently, the screws are a little sharper than average so they don't need pilot holes.

Screwing down a subfloor would be the slowest and most expencive way to do it, it will leave a hump, and will tend to want to lift the subfloor as it makes contact with the second piece before grabbing.
8D ringed shanked nails in a nail gun would be 100 times faster and there near impossible to pull out.
