i wouldn't worry about the lack of ridge beam.
how big are the existing rafters? if they're only 2X4 or 2X6, considering either sistering on the next bigger dimension along the slope that will carry the new shed roof, or doubling up what's there.

Correct, like you would put behind a chimney. Since the roof that is there is in terrible shape after years of water sitting in that valley eating away at the shingles and subsequently the sheathing underneath. At this point I need to do it correctly.
