water stain on sheetrock

I have some exposed drywall under a window that has a water stain.
See the attached pic.
The drywall has been exposed and open for months and the stain doesn't look like it's grown over those months.
I'm gonna pull it out and inspect but any idea how these stains got here?
One clue might be behind the 2 nails on the right which have rusty heads.
Thanks

Could be lots of things.
Condensation from single pane windows, or to high a humidity in the house.
Improper flashing, rotted siding, windows need reglazing.

You should also post a picture of the window from the outside showing the trim on all four sides of the window.

Will do that tomorrow. I got the Sheetrock off and didn't see any leakage points.
I'm thinking that previous owners left the window open during a rain storm or something.
I'll do exterior pics and post back though.
Thanks

Those look like surface water stains ---my guess is condensation dripping from that window---
