Re: vent hood size/brick wall

The hood vent is 8"? Make the hole big enough for your weather cap insert. You can't reduce and get your air flow.

As for the structure, I can't comment to much on that. However, you likely only have a facade for brick, so not much structural weight at all.

Cheers!

Can't answer your code question, but an issue often arises with large exhaust fans. What cfm is the fan and do you have any naturally drafted appliances like a gas water heater or furnace?

Sorry to drift a bit, but it's midnight and I have the time .

your manual should tell you but 6" is min. If you reduce it can increase noise and the venting cap of the hood. Everybody must have the core bit no greater than 6" because max I see everywhere is those 6" vents outside.

Yes, most are vaneer. From residential to commercial, it's all the same. (commercial will use concrete block behind though so at least they are closer, right?) Anyways, I've had to put 4, 6, 8, 10, 12" holes in brick walls before. Some round, some square. We've never had an issue with 8" causing cracks or anything like that.

Cheers!
