I've been watching Holmes on Homes lately, and love the show. The only thing, and I'm sure many of us are this way, is that you see something on the show and don't know if they are a little too crazy about one topic.
One issue that seems to be coming up frequently are vapor barriers. I'm going to be building a house and would like to know what the proper way to do this is. It seems like on the show, they will put a vapor barrier up and tape it all over, including over outlet covers. Is this really necessary? Does it matter what kind of house you have?
We are having first floor brickwrap with vinyl siding on the second floor on the outside, then DOW Weathermate exterior housewrap, then I'm assuming some kind of plywood, then BIB insulation, and then the drywall. Does the thing that hold the BIB insulation in act as a vapor barrier? Should a plastic one be put up? Should it be taped and caulked on the bottom of the floor?
