timbo....didnt say they suck. Soffits have they're purpose and if designed with scale in mind they can actually look nice. In your case however, I think you would be better served to remove them. Perhaps a coffered ceiling would add the architectural interest you desire.

And stop cogitating, you'll grow hairy palms.

A grown man cogitating. Ewwww! I quit when I began needing glasses.

Taller ceilings are always a plus in my opinion.

Still don't know who Pollack is and don't care to. It was an honest misunderstanding believe it or not, your choice. I've admitted my misunderstanding twice. I'v got plenty of character, would you like to borrow some. Even when someone gives you an honest opinion like 12 penny you get defensive. The thank button works just fine as an appropropriate response. Agree with 12 penny it looks wrong. A sawsall, crowbar and a few other tools of destruction are the fix for that soffit. Post pics when you get it done (I gotta see that). Did I mention the thank button is I the bottom right hand side. You think you are getting all the help you need with all your snotty responses but there is no help here for what needs fixing in your upstairs.
