![]() Siding seams layout?
Where do the pros put the butts when installing clapboard siding?
Which would be visually more appealing, placing the siding so that the butts are uniform or more of a random pattern?

With the random pattern do you fit in the first course then take the remainder of that course and start the second course? How big is the smallest piece you would use? Do you try keep each course at 1 piece if possible, such as between windows, doors, etc. or does it not matter? I'm using fiber-cement siding if that makes any difference.
