setting flagstone on top of a hearth

need some advice. Just finished applying stone veneer to my fireplace and I'm ready to put the flagstone 87x24x2 on top of my existing brick hearth. Proper or best installing advice would be appreciated.

I'm actually doing the same thing right now. The new hearthstone has to be even with the firebox floor, so I started out by chiseling away the top layer of brick and mortar. I'm almost done with that now. Next I'll make a form around the hearth and a screed, and use type S mortar to make a nice flat base. Like you, my hearthstone will be 2" thick, so I'll make sure the base is down about 2 1/4". After that sets, I'll spread mortar with a notched trowel and set the hearthstone.
