Neal I considered possibly an I-beam across the span but the only ones I can find are 8+ inches. Max I can do is 6”. I also considered possibly a couple really nice 2x6 sistered together across and then the rafters over that.

The first 2 pics are of the exterior of the wall.

The other showing where the 4x4 rafters meet the header and tie into the other part of the living room roof.

I would go bigger, even if that brings you below the ceiling. There is nothing you can buy or build today that will match the strength of that old beam and it sagged.
How high are the top if the walls?

Top of the walls are about 7’ 8”. Almost 100 years since the living room area was added, id sag too lmao. It does not help the beam strength wise thay it is not sitting on edge. I have always heard that is the strongest way

Re: Roof rafters help

They do make a 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 LVL but I am no engineer and I would like to see bigger, but's your call.
