Replacing windows

I am replacing my old wood Marvin windows. Sills are rotted so these are not replacement windows. I want to use the Marvin Integrity windows since I have them in my addition but the sizes are different. The new window is inch and a half shorter which I think I can work with. The width of the new window with the jamb extensions is the exact size of my rough opening. I was thinking I could cut out a jack and install 5/4 to gain some room. Any thoughts? Also plan on getting the pvc trim with the historic sill. 3 1/2" flat casing.

Reducing the header support could be problematic, especially on a load bearing wall.

replacing windows

I spoke to a contractor who has replaced 2x jacks with 3/4 plywood. I might go with 5/4 instead. That would be plenty to support a header that is less than 3 feet wide.
