Question about attic framing

Hi folks,

My attic is seriously under-insulated, and I'm planning a project to correct this. In the course of poking around in the attic, I've found that my ceiling joists are 2x4's on 24" centers - is that at all normal? I expected to find 2x6's at 16", just as I have in my floor joists.

I'm not planning to install decking or use the attic for storage, so I'm not really concerned from a structural standpoint... I'm more curious about it than anything. Anyone know anything about this?

Hope everyone has had a great Thanksgiving!

Dave

Hi vsheetz,

I'm referring to the actual ceiling joists - in case I'm unclear on my terminology, I mean the long spans from which the sheet rock for the ceiling is hung.

Yes, I understand. Are they trusses? What is the unsurpported span?

you will be able to tell if it is a truss by looking to see if there is any diagonal bracing fron the rafters to the ceiling joists. If it is the case then it isn't unusual for it to be on 24 inch centers.

Got it - thanks for the explanation Rob.

vsheetz: yes, there are diagonal braces between the rafters and joists... will take that to mean this is normal based on yours and Rob's comments.

Appreciate your feedback!

Trusses: http://www.tricountytruss.com/CodeChanges.aspx

Be sure not to close any soffit vents with insulation and address the slope of roof/wall area to stop the air path from negating your new insulation.
Be safe, Gary

17,000 dryer fires a year, when did you last clean the inside of the dryer near motor or the exhaust ducting?
