Porch railing question

I have asked a bunch if questions about our new porch and I am down to installing the railings finally. When we originally did our plans we were installing 6x6 posts and wrapping them in faux stone from texture plus. Our plans had us using 2x6 for the railings. Our house is on a hill so it is about a 20 foot fall from our porch. We wanted to use 2x6s so it would be much stronger but apparently there are no brackets to attach them to the 6x6s. I had planned on having the railing go from the inside of the 6x6 to the inside of the next 6x6 and installed so the long side is facing up. It just seems there is no way to attach this. I figure simpson would have something but there is nothing that I can find. Do people not use 2x6 for railings? If so, how do you attach them?

Re: Porch railing question

I am confused .

You stated "the long side facing up", do you mean the 5.25 in side is up, or do you mean the length of the 2X6 is up?

Yes people use 2X6 as railings often.

I would fabricate my own brackets from some 2 or 3 inch angle iron, cut to the length needed to lay the 2X6 on and screw it to the bracket, and the bracket to the post.

This bracket is on the underside of the 2X6 and partially hidden.

Yes that is correct. The 5 inch side would be facing up. My dad said the same thing about just making the bracket with angle iron. I am just surprised that there aren't simpson brackets already.

Re: Porch railing question

I would also make them from either Stainless, or Aluminum, not regular iron, it rusts too fast.

Ayuh,.... Tip 'em out alittle bit,.....
Abit of pitch away from the porch will drain the water off, 'n they won't rot as quickly,....

Put the cup of the end-grain, down, helps with drainin', 'n warpage,....

Ditto buildin' yer own brackets,...

Thank you for all the replies. I was going to buy sone today and realized there many thicknesses. What us recommended, I was going to buy 1/4, would that be strong enough. Oh I guess type would be important, probably going to use aluminum.
