Outdoor Fireplace Help Needed

I am buying a stainless steel insert outdoor gas/woodburning fireplace insert. Obviously I need to build around it. SHouldI create a wooden frame and sheath that or would it be better to use cinder blocks and add a facade to that? The inside will have stove flue of 8" but should not come in to contact with the cinder blocks. And how do I cap off the top, ie I will have a round pipe coming thru a square hole. I will have a flame arrestor/cap but how to fit around the pipe.

Thnaks all,

Tim in Houston

Typically the fireplace supplier will provide detailed documentation of recommendations, clearances, etc. which will answer many of your questions.

I am buying the FP insert from Direct Buy at an incredible savings over local retail and internet pricing, so I won't have that support.

It's definatetly better to surround the FP with masonry, especially in an exterior application. It is more complicated to work with though IMO. As for capping off the flue, it sounds like a formed concrete cap may be the best option.
