One of the posts on my deck is splitting, fix ?

HI, sorry to bump up such an old thread but one of the posts on my deck are splitting.

This is the post that holds up one corner, but its the part near the roof that is split. Is there anything I can other than just replacing the entire post? It looks like quite the job. Can I drive some 3 1/2" wood screws to keep it from getting worse? Or what about screwing in a support 2" x 4" along side of it?

Some pictures would help but a few screws can’t hurt.
