Notching a Stud

I'm installing a microwave on an exterior wall and want to vent it out the back through the wall. There is a stud just on the edge of where the vent needs to go. I read that you can notch a stud up to 25%, but the accompanying pictures only show the notch on the short face of the stud. I need to notch the wide face. No more than 3/8" will be notched, about 4" tall. Is this ok?

Re: Notching a Stud

3/8" will not compromise the stud.

Re: Notching a Stud

1 & 5/8 - 3/8 = 1 & 1/4 inches.

Which should be adequate support for the structure in that area.

If you get it precise you should be fine, but much more and you might have problems.

Is there a way to sister another stud to it on the opposite side from the notching, as a precaution?

I tend to over structure things as a safety measure.
