I would like to rip up the carpet on my stairs and replace with wood finish. Unfortunately we don't have the budget for hardwood Oak stair treads at nearly $30 each plus other supplies. I found we can get yellow pine stair treads for less than $10 each and they have a nice grain pattern and NO knots.
1. Am I wasting my time with yellow pine for stair treads compared to a hard wood?
2. Can yellow pine be stained and finished for good appearance?
If there is no alternative to using hardwood treads, such as oak, then we may just resort to new carpeting. I appreciate any advice or comments you may have.
