New deck and patio

We recently bought a 2 story house built in 1983 in Minneapolis, MN.

It currently has no deck or patio. It's a walkout lower level so a patio is a must but I'd also like a deck above the patio on the 2nd floor.

Not sure if I want to do concrete or brick for the patio. Is there an order as to which I should install first? Deck and then patio or patio and then deck?

I can't afford to do both this year. I'm assuming if I installed the patio first I'd either have to also do the footings for the deck at the same time or tear up part of the patio and install the footings with the deck install next year.

What is the smartest/cheapest option?

Thanks

I'd build the deck first.
Find out what all your local codes are, building dept. may even have a hand out.
A second story deck is a whole different ball game.

I would DESIGN fine deck first, Mark the footings, and then 1) if they are IN the patio, put them in and then the patio or 2) if they are outside of the patio, just do the atoo now. Either way, get that patio in first as you'll use it and love it all spring summer and fall. Ron

build the 2nd story deck first, going to require substantial footings, anything below the deck is going to take a lot of abuse during the build. But once its in you'll have a dry shady work space below to finish the patio

I have done it. But did complete the balcony deck first. 24 x 24 x 6 footings went in first, topped w/ 16 x 16 pier to above grade. The 6 x 6 post and braces have a tenon connection with the triple 2 x 8 built up beam. Was constructed all together on the ground and raised as a single unit. OAL size is 22 x 10. Also used 2 tiers of scaffolding to assist with joist structure.
Could not imagine trying to build it over a finished patio!
Poured concrete and built the winder steps below after

I think you should build the deck first and then the patios. Sothat you will have a dry shady work space to finish the patios.
