I have a redwood deck with rough-sawn cedar trim. And I also have rough-sawn cedar fascia on my whole house.

I did stain mine for a deeper color, though it isn't necessary. But you DO have to get on an every 6 months maintainence program of recovering it with some kind of protective finish, or it begins to turn grey.

And believe no one when they tell you neither will rot. I know for a fact that BOTH will.

Cedar can be protected when you drive the last nail. You can stain it, but get a stain that has a UV protector in it or apply it over the stain. Stain is just a color, it provides no protection from the sun or rain unless it's specified on the label.

Sorry, but that's not true unless the wood has been sufficiently dried prior to installation.

If it's stained too early, the natural moisture in the wood will make the stain peel off.
