ok, I see your point. Thanks for the explanation. Having watched them dig the foundation to my house, I can attest to there being a lot of rock underneath, but how far down until they hit that rock, I am not certain. Also, I know that they backfilled quite a bit around the foundation, and so I might have many more feet of soil before I hit rock around the house than 25 feet away from the house. I have been under the assumption that a concrete slab was the "safe bet"--maybe that is what the original guy was selling. Thanks again.

If you ever have a problem with the pavers like heaving or sinking it is easily fixed with a little labor, a plate compactor and a few buckets of crushed stone. You usually can't tell it was repaired.
