Is MDF strong enough for a bartop?

Hello.. I'm building a bar in the kitchen, and I'm curious if 2 sheets of 3/4 MDF board glued together would be strong enough to support a marble tile top.... I had read on one of these sites to glue 2 pieces of 1 1/2" ply, or 4 pieces of 3/4" together for the bartop, but I'd like to keep the cost down where possible...

Also, should I take any extra precautions against water damage, ie spills and such?

Thanks for the feedback!

MDF is not structural, and will barely support itself. I would stick with plywood, 1-3/4 sheet is fine.
