Im looking to do some repair work on my house. I need to do some repointing here and there ( nothing major) and I need to determine what kind of mortar they used. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Matching mortar for esthetics is not a simple job, but if esthetics is not the main issue, any mortar mix will do the job. For proper pointing, the joint needs to be ground out 3 times the width of the joint (1/2" joint requires 1 1/2" deep), and it needs to be cleaned out(air works good).

Is it an old house? If the original mortar is a lime mortar you will need to use a lime mortar. The mortar used today and sold at most stores can do some major damage to your house if that is the case. There are labs that can tell you exactly what the mix is on your house. Give them a sample and they will analyze it for you. The mix might not match 100% when new. But it will weather over some time and match very well.
