location of windows and tyvek when using 1" foam exteior

Inspector demands I use 1" of foam on exterior since I cant get minimum r-value in 2 X 4 walls.

He didnt say and I forgot to ask since we were talking of something else. when using vinyl windows with nailing flanges do you put those windows over the foam at window opening?? And then tyvek wrapped as usual??

Or is window installed straight to sheathing and foam over the flanges?? IF so,where does the tyvek go??

seems like the first way would work much better

You would put up a 1" (5/4) thick piece of wood around the window opening and butt the foam up to that. This is so the window flange can be nailed into something solid.

Edit: "The inspector demands"? Is this old or new construction?

I had never seen rigid foam board on the outside of a house until I worked a couple of Habitat for Humanity builds last summer. We installed it exactly as Clutchcargo described. When I asked why it needed to be there in the first place (house is in North Carolina) I was told because it was donated material and the manufacturer's name is on it. We actually had to remove and reinstall one piece because it was installed with the name upside down.

Where are you located?
What is the min R value in 2x4 for your area?
You can buy R15 for a 2x4 wall

I'm renovating my house built that is built with 2x4s and opted not to put foam board up because I didn't want to take a chance of the hardiplank sagging over time.
Since it's an existing structure I am only required to put enough insulation to fill the void which is R13 or R15.
