Knots for Layout Lines

So this is a total noob question but what the heck. I may sound like an idiot for asking it but since I am hoping to learn, here goes.

I've seen countless instances where people have installed string/layout lines for establishing straight lines for fence posts, foundation edges, etc. I have done this myself from time to time and I have always struggled with tying the string at the 2nd end in order to make the line taught (I've gotten creative knowing that my solution was not what the pro's typically do). What is the best way to do this? Perhaps the name of a common knot is the best explanation and from there I can find out how to tie it from a book of knots (I'm not much of a Boy Scout unfortunately).

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Re: Knots for Layout Lines

First, start with masons string, it stretches and once pulled and tied it will not sag.

To tie the second end I often just wrap it multiple times around that nail and then half hitch it with a loop so I can pull the lose end to release it like a shoe lace.

You can also back up a couple of feet and tie a loop, double the string and tie the double into a knot leaving a one to two inch loop. Then around your final nail and back through that loop and you can cinch it up and half hitch it to hold.

Now, as for actual names for knots, I just used what I have heard over the years, not a navy guy or mason or boy scout.

I did my string like the video except I used two fingers instead of just one.

That's cool. Kinda sorta like a (modified) timber hitch.
