![]() JOB: Hang 65" smart board to a chalkboard.
If I can get some input ...I've been asked to hang a 65" smart board on a chalkboard. It being as heavy as it is ( aprox 90lbs) I need to drill into a chalkboard with drywall behind it possibly using toggle bolts to hang mounting bracket. Question is can I drill into the board without doing major damage to the board? Use a special bit?
Thanks for any and all help. |

What is the magic of leaving and ruining the chalkboard in the process? Can you not just remove the chalkboard and install the whiteboard. Wing mollies are the correct weight bearing fastener, but remember it will also be a part of the face of the whiteboard. Is that acceptable?

You may have something with possibly taking down the chalk board. The wing mollies would not go into the smart board they go into the bracket that hangs on the wall then the smart board hangs on the bracket. Only concern with doing damage to the chalk board is after drilling the hole would i be able to place the wing mollie in the hole I created or would it be broken so badly that I would need to re drill. This kind of reminds me of drilling into plexy glass you would need to tape it so it wouldn't shatter during the drilling process.

The chalk board used to be plywood and now maybe mdf, it might have a back frame so taking it down would be a better way to go. It sounds like you need structure in the wall just like hanging a TV.

Assuming you are referring to a slate chalkboard, I would suggest starting your hole with a small masonry bit, and then progressing to larger and larger bits until you get to the required size.

In 1950 some chalk boards were made out of Plaster about 1 inch in thickness.

I would be looking at either taking down the chalkboard, or mounting brackets below and above the chalkboard to hold the smart-board independently of the chalkboard. Nealtw likes this.

We had the same job at the school I do maintenance for. The first board we hung using a Chief brand mount (https://www.cdw.com/product/chief-ob...-mount/5132658) . For the other boards we had a welder fabricate brackets that rest on the chalk board tray and then anchored into the glazed brick mortar joints above the board. The cost was probably about the same for either option. Attach above and below board. I have only been at the school for a couple of years but I think some boards are glass and others slate...not positive, but neither would be great to drill through and anchor unless you went into a stud. The board would be pretty much wrecked I think.

Still another option is a floor mount TV stand. With casters maybe, if they might want to use the blackboard sometimes. For a school, something significantly heavy duty, not the cheapest stand on Amazon.
