insulation worht it or not?

Good morning,

My question is, Do I need to insulate the ceiling of the basement. I am also thinking to make it soundproof as I am making home-theater in basement. What kind of sound proofing material should I use? I mean Should I go with insulation which gives me sound proofening or should I leave the insulation and just add material (like foam)to make it sound proof. Or If there is any better choice exists?

Thanks
Randy

True soundproofing involves isloating framing members from each other and is expensive. Likewise, true sound insulation that can be laid between joists is also expensive. Standard insulation does give some sound insulation, but not a lot.

Sound proofing information:

Edit: The two sites GBR in WA mentions in the next post have been removed. Thanks GBR.

You're looking a a lot of money to sound "proof" for a home theater. There are ways to help "lessen" the sound, but still not exactly inexpensive. You might also check some of the drywall mfgr's. sites for information. United States Gypsum, for example has an online handbook. Sound control is covered in one section....
