Insulation

Hello everyone! Together with my husband we have bought an old house which contain living part and an attic. However, we would like to manage this second part, I mean attic, and make it useful. Roof is made of baking sheet and it is not insulated, so there is very cold and it is impossible to live here. The area that this attic take is about 164ft 2 . What would be the cost of insulation and what materials should be used to do it? I hope that someone can help us and give us some appropriable tips!

Re: Insulation

Hi ann and welcome to the forum.

Your question is common and the answer/s are not good, cost and being code compliant.
There is a lot of explanation behind what I'm going to say but best to get it out front.

1. You need to check with your building department to determine what generation of building and energy codes they are following.
2. And what permits they will need.
3. Assuming the space can be upgraded to living space there are insulation ans egress requirements to discuss.

Insulating the rafters up there is complicated by the R-value needed and maintaining air flow under the roof for ventilation. You will need to give us your approximate location so we can look up your zone guidelines.

Re: Insulation

Have you established the structure of the floor can handle being used as more than an empty attic?

As Bud said, this is a bad idea more often than it's a good one.
