How to protect against carpenter bees

Carpenter bees are boring into my header board on front porch. I have some traps but they have only caught a few. All of the suggestions that I have found online give suggestions on various ways of killing them after they have bored the hole.

Are there methods of preventing them from boring in the first place?

Don't have exposed wood on your house.

I have wood all over my house and the carpenter bees love it. Oddly, I saw several in the spring when we had several unusually hot days. We then had a few days of freezing weather and I haven't seen one since. I even installed some traps to catch them this year and there are none to catch.

Spray the exposed wood with Timbor.
Google it.
I make up my own mix of "Roach Away" powder, hot water and a dash of dish soap and use a pump sprayer.
It contains 95% Boric Acid, which is to used to kill many kinds of insects

Re: How to protect against carpenter bees

They seem to prefer to come in from the bottom, and seem to prefer the rim boards. Although I expect joists are at risk also.

By deck's rim joists are ipe, but joists are pressure treated softwood. I have read that stain won't slow them down, but a oil based paint will stop them. Taking the "if a little is good, a lot is better" approach, I painted the bottom of my deck joists with brush-on roofing tar. Seems to work.

Of course, first you need to kill the ones that are in there.

I have a can of Raid with the little tube on the spray head that can swivel to point straight up. One little squirt, five seconds of furious buzzing, then quiet. Fill with caulk after a couple days.
