how much excess siding to order?

I measured out the house and garage, coming in at 1,730sf (yes, its a small house). I know you can't use every inch of every piece, is there a "rule of thumb" on how much extra to buy? I was thinking 20sq=2000sf=15% surplus. Too much? Too little? Thanks!

I would think that 20 sq would be plenty, if not a little overkill. You are going to have your cut outs from your windows/doors, etc. which could be used in other spots as well.

THere are always the inevitable miscuts of which you will have a little back up. Also, that will leave you with pieces to replace with in the future if needed.

You could always build a dog house and use it up there......

How did you come up with 1730sf. Did you measure straight wall footage or did you deduct for all your openings?

On a average home (17-23 windows) I measure total wall footage and don’t deduct for windows and doors other than garage doors and go with that. Of course if you have a “wall of glass” somewhere that changes things a bit.

The big thing is the “return policy” if its “special order no returns” then I always order a little short and when I get close to the end order the rest. In my area anyway I can get just about anything twice a week so this usually doesn’t slow me down.

If returns are no problem and the siding is something like Cedar or Redwood Lap I always get extra from the start because there will always be boards I just won’t use and will return.

Depends what kind of siding you're using. Wood has less useable scrap than vinyl. I would generally go with 10% over unless there is a disproportionately high or low number of window/doors. Also add more if there are a lot of angle cuts following a roof line
