how to measure a large arc?

I'm working on a porch roof that has a large decorative arc fascia that originally had nothing behind it. I have removed three posts and installed a header that will be supported by two posts. Is there a simple way to measure the open arc so I can cut a filler for it? Once complete the header and fascia will be covered with aluminum.

Re: how to measure a large arc?

Just hold a board up behind it and scribe it and then cut it.

Tape up a long piece of paper or several 8.5 x 11 sheets taped together. Then sketch over it with the side of a pencil like the investigators do when recovering the indentations made by the writing on the sheet above.

Give that your best freehand line and it will be very close. Use that to cut a piece of cardboard if you want to test.

Or, if you have a nice piece of cardboard apply some paint to that arch and press the cardboard against it. Many way to skin this cat.

Like bud says, many ways to skin it.

A 1X4, long enough to span the area, and even a Bingo dauber to mark the edge of the arc, place the 1X4 against the area, magic, you have a template.

If you are wrapping it, what is the filler for.
Cut the bottom few inches off and put a 1x2 flush with bottom of the beam.
Or put a board on the bottom of the beam over flush with the outside of that board.

Measure the distance between the termination points from say left to right where the arch terminates.
Than on the piece of wood you will cut the arch from place a nail at the left point than measure over & place a nail at the right point.
Now with a piece of string go around both nails and tie a knot keeping the string tight make sure the knot is located bottom at the center of the area to be cut out than with a pencil start at the Left with the pencil inside the string and pulling the string tight pull the pencil to the Right nail point. This should give you the arch between the two points.

The filler is for screws for plant hangers once the job is done.

Tape paper up high so it hangs down over it. Lift the paper and apply lipstick to the face of the curve and smooth the paper over the curve and you have a pattern.
Hang clear plastic the same way and mark the curve with a sharpie.

Not enough room with beam up against the back.
But he could hold a board up and spray paint in to the void.

Re: how to measure a large arc?

Such great ideas. And Nealtw, I think I misunderstood your suggestion when I first read it. The neighbor that's in construction that's helping nailed the existing boards to the header so cutting them straight may be an issue but I like the solution. I purchased some sidewalk chalk in case it's too difficult to remove the lower half of the fascia. I'll use the chalk to imprint the arc onto the new piece of wood.
