How to mark oval hole for flue penetration

Sealing a ceiling penetration for a hot water heater flue on a slanted ceiling. What's the easiest tip/trick for transferring the measurement for a round flue pipe onto the sheet metal, where the cutout will have to be an oval due to the slant of the ceiling?

I know there has to be an easy way to do this! And I'm sure it will work better and get a tighter fit than my trial and error method would!

Thanks.

Hold the flue vertical touching the ceiling. Mount a pencil on a stick. Hold the stick tight and vertical on the flue pipe and go around the pipe moving the stick up and down as required.

Or cut a section of flue pipe (or something of similar diameter) off at the same angle as the ceiling then you can push it up tight and draw the line.
