How Do I Install a Dryer Vent Straight Through Through the Roof

Hello Again,

Got dinged on an mechanical inspection for not having a dryer vent. I'm planning to use a heat pump ventless dryer. He said I have to do it for the next guy.

I installed 2 flexible bathroom vent ducts and a 6" rigid kitchen vent through a 7 in 12 pitched roof with asphalt shingles. The rigid kitchen vent has an elbow at the top in order to facilitate the fact that the roof vent sits at the angle of the roof. I do not want an elbow on my dryer vent. I'd like the 4" rigid galvanized to go straight up.

What kind of roof flashing should I use in order to run the vent pipe straight through the roof and be code compliant?

How are you going to clean the lint out of the pipe? Blowing straight up it is going to collect pretty good.

I agree with Jim. The vertical pressure at that height will cause lint accumulation rather than extraction. Using an auxiliary booster fan may not even help. I'd definitely consider going as laterally as possible, and not poke another hole in an otherwise non leaking roof

I don't think I have ever seen one thru the roof.

I don't know if there are building code rules for dryer vents, but I doubt that many dryers are spec'd for much vertical lift. If you're just looking to pass an inspection, I'd put a standard vent out through the wall and stuff it full of insulation. Cheaper, easier and less holes through the shingles.

Re: How Do I Install a Dryer Vent Straight Through Through the Roof

Thanks Gentlemen,

I really can't go through a wall. I have no roof overhang, so no soffits. W/D are stacked kind of in the middle of the (tiny) space. That's why I went with a new fangled ventless dryer. And it's too late to move it. Poor planning.

This 1,000 unit apartment building I'm living in at the moment has all of the dryer vents going through the roof. And they don't work very well.

I've painted a lot of houses that had the dryer vent go thru the roof. If you install a lint trap where it turns to go up and clean it regularly it isn't too bad but IMO lint on the roof like pictured in post #5 really looks bad.

I would run it thru one of the extra in line filters.

Thanks for all the input.
Nealtw, I like the filter idea and they are available at my HD. I will pick one up.

An unrelated question - why does the framing inspection occur after insulation is in? Seems counterintuitive to me. Especially if using spray foam.

If that happened here you would be removing everything down to mechanical for the framing inspection.

Same here, insulation inspection is after framing and electrical rough in inspections have passed.

Re: How Do I Install a Dryer Vent Straight Through Through the Roof

Hello Everyone,

Back to my original question, I have searched and searched and still I cannot find a roof jack which will allow me to cut a hole and run the vent straight up through the 7:12 roof. Everything seems to require an elbow below the roof to connect vent pipe to roof jack, which adds a restriction and more lint buildup.

A roof might be anywhere from 3/12 to 20/12, it would be a lot of inventory to make them for pitch specific. So yes you would have to have an elbow to fit the last fitting but is just around 40 -45*

Re: How Do I Install a Dryer Vent Straight Through Through the Roof

Seems to me like using these two together should work. The elbow can be twisted anywhere from 0 degrees to 90 degrees…… And I am not a "through the roof" dryer venting fan either.

As someone is going to have to do the "wear on tear" walks on the roof shingles to assure the roof cap stays clear of lint buildup. And a 7:12 roof to me, is spooky to walk without full safety fall restraint gear and anchoring off.
