Gas Fireplace Insert

Hi there.
A friend has moved into an older home with a gas fireplace insert installed in the existing fireplace. They are finding alot of cold draft coming in from around the insert. Just wondering how safe it is to stuff pink insulation around the sides and top of unit to stop the draft?
Thank you

Does your friend close the flue when the unit is not being used? Does the fireplace have a properly functioning flue?
I would check out these before making some make shift repair.

Hi Ron6519

I am not totally sure, but when I looked into the small opening above the unit I could see what looked to be a small silver flex hose approx. 5" maybe 6" extending out the top, also the same joined at the cap on the roof extended out the existing chimney. Assuming that this hose is the chimney for the gas unit I can't see how the old flue could be closed if one still exists.
