Garage Roof Framing

For a garage 24 wide by 26 long with a 4/12 pitched roof what should the size for a cut roof be of the ridge board and joists and their spacing?

Get engineered trusses.
With rafters and ceiling joists you will need a beam or wall down the center.

Re: Garage Roof Framing

You can, it'll just be easier with trusses.
We also can't really tell you what the specs are going to be for your building. Local codes, snow loads, design, etc. mean too many variables for us to just spit out a number for you.

You need someone that understands all the engineering required. So you add the cost of that person to the material and the value you put on your time.
And then compare that to trusses. 2 people one day, maybe two for the learning curve. For a few more bucks you could get the bonus room too but that would really increase the pitch.

Re: Garage Roof Framing

NJ and snow load 30. House about those numbers, either way. I used 2x6 for the rafters but the inspector had recommended 2x8. 2x10 ridge board, ceiling joists as collar ties and midway rafter ties. By the book rafter ties is one third of the height toward the ridge. Plan was diagonal brace to the rafters and the mid house beam, but inspector did not like the added load, probably because bsmt mid beam was engineered without the braces in the plan. Where I didn't put the rafter tie, roof dipped a little. Rafter ties every rafter, 16" oc. Passed frame inspection. Search for rafter span charts and your area snow load. Also see if the span chart says anything about the types of roofing and how many layers. Neither an engineer nor the most experienced framer, so I over-engineer to compensate. Also, depends on the inspector. Some would want every stick by the book.
Truss would give you a clear span, but regular framing would cost less. If using i joists, 4:12 roof may not work because you can cut only so much from the i joist where it intersects with the rafter on the wall plate.
