I'm putting an addition onto my house and the foundation at the rear of the addition steps up 1 foot because the house is built into a slight hill. The walls are 2x6 and the foundation is 8" poured concrete, so this leaves a ledge on the inside. The problem is that I have stairs running parallel with the step in the foundation and the more I move them away the more room I lose elsewhere.
What are my options for finishing the concrete and keeping the stairs as close to the 2x6 studs as possible? Can I glue drywall to the concrete or do I need to fur it? Should I rest the stair stringer on the concrete and narrow the last one or two treads? Any suggestions are appreciated!
I guess it somewhat depends on how wide your stairs are. If 2" won't make stink for a difference in the width of the stairs, then narrow up the last few steps and set the stair stringer on the concrete if necessary. That is not ideal, but life has compromises. Use EPDM gaskets or treated lumber against the concrete. Why not just paint the concrete for that little bit? Too ugly?
