Question

Building a garden shed, help

Hello DIY chatroom forum,

I am here today because I have got a nice space in my back yard where I would love to build a garden shed but I have never done this before so I was hoping I could get a little help from you guys or at least pointed in the right direction. I know my way around most tools as I do most of the DIY around my house, anything from plastering to electrics if it's not too major I will give it ago.

As for the shed, I am a real beginner and you guys might find some of these questions stupid but honestly I'm clueless. I guess the most important question is what wood would you guys use to build a frame? and then, what wood to use for the walls and roof? I plan on using felt to waterproof the roof but if you guys have any better suggestions please let me know. Once this is sorted I have plenty more question.

Dimension:

Length: 3m
Width: 2.5m
Hight 2m (not including the roof)

I understand you guys aren't going to just draw me a plan but I greatly appreciate it if you could point me in the direction of where I could find one. Really looking forward to speaking with you guys,

If there is any other information that you guys need please let me know and I will get it added on asap.

P.S sorry about the poor terminology.

Thanks

Ho Tom and welcome to the forum,
Choose your foundation style first, slab or deck on pads.
Then find a plan, it can be a stick by stick plan or just a picture where we will help with the materials list. But we need to know the size and ahape you like.

Re: Building a garden shed, help

Check your municipality codes. Some areas require a construction permit if you are pouring a slab as opposed to floating it on piers.

The walls can be standard 2x4 framing sheathed in plywood, T-111 or siding. If using plywood or T-111, be sure it is pressure treated.

On the roof you can use truses with OSB sheathing.

If the shed is visible from the road, consider anthetics such as matching the house.

Check out your local lumber yards. Some of them have kits with all the materials you need ready to go.

FYI Even in Canada lumber is still sold in feet and inches. 2x4 studs, 4x8 sheets of plywood. You want a 10 x 8 shed, 6.5 feet tall.

I wonder if the fellow making the vid ever determined why one doesn't measure down the length of the rafter material when subtracting half the thickness of the ridge board?
