I'm new to the forum. I bought my first home about a year ago and I've finally built up the nerve to do some renovations. My first priority is the man cave, of course. I basically want to remove about 5' of the stair wall and put a rail and spindles in there instead. First of all, I don't know if it's a load bearing wall. The wall sits perpendicular the center beam and directly under a floor joist the spans from the center beam to the outside wall. The walls on the main floor and the top floor sit on this joist. The wall in question doesn't seem to be nailed directly into the floor joist. It looks like there are spacers between the top of the wall and the floor joist. But even if it is a load bearing bearing wall, could I just keep the end post of the wall and just remove the 3 studs to make the opening? Thanks in advance.
