Basement drain or "hole" ?

Hi -

In my basement we have a drain/hole that is about 6 inches deep and I have no idea what it's there for.

5 years ago my sump pumps went out and my pit overflowed and there was also water spraying out of the PVC pipe from the hole like it was a 4th of july sparkler.

Then last week, we got some rain, but not a lot. Some almost mud stuff came out through the drain, but the sump pump pit was fine. I was obviously out of town and my wife had to deal with it. I live in Dupage county outside of Chicago, IL.

Can anyone help on what this is for?

Re: Basement drain or "hole" ?

Likely a drain line leading to a dry well, and one or more downspouts are tied to it.
