Attaching deck ledger to existing beam

I'm building a deck attached to the back room of my house. The existing room used to be a screened in porch, but a previous owner put up some walls and insulation. There's an exposed beam below the room and I'd like to use this to attach the ledger board for my deck. The beam is set back a bit from the (creosote) siding and I need to know how best to fill up the space between the existing beam and the new ledger.

My plan is to fill the space with a PT 2x6 and a strip of 1/4" plywood. I'll use 10" galvanized carriage bolts (20" o.c., arranged in a zig-zag pattern, 2" from the top and bottom of the existing beam). My concern, however, is that the ledger doesn't seem very well supported at the top. This wouldn't be a big deal, I think, if it weren't so far from the beam.

Am I right to be concerned? Should I do something else? (I could, for example, also put some lag screws higher up on the ledger lined up with the studs.) Or does the current plan seem feasible?

Here is a diagram of the existing structure and proposed plan:

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums @amount .

I'd be using the existing beam and hanger directly off of that. There's no need for the rest of that mess.

Re: Attaching deck ledger to existing beam

Thanks for the quick reply, kwikfishron!

I thought about that, but then I couldn't figure out how I would hang my 2x10 joists. That spacer behind the siding would still be in the way if they were flush with the bottom of the beam. If I hung them lower (so that the bottoms of the joists were below the bottom of the existing beam), the deck surface would be too low to step into the existing door.

Or maybe I'm not understanding your suggestion...

Why do you need 2x10 joist? What is the span of the deck?

It's a pretty long span to the outside beam. About 15' and I've already purchased the 2x10 joists.

Notch the 2X10 joists, so that they can slip under the obtrusion of the siding.

Then hang right to the beam, They will be strong enough.

Re: Attaching deck ledger to existing beam

Oh, I see!

So... no ledger. Just hang the notched 2x10s directly on the existing beam keeping the bottoms of everything flush? I suppose this would mean using 2x8 joist hangers, right?

And then what about flashing? How would I keep water from collecting in the space between the notch in the 2x10s and the existing structure?
